SCDMV Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Practice Test

Before entering a curve while driving, downshifting is the recommended action because it helps to maintain better control of the vehicle. When you downshift, you allow the engine to provide more power and better traction through the curve. This is particularly important in a commercial vehicle, which tends to be larger and heavier than standard vehicles. By reducing your speed beforehand, you can also reduce the risk of losing control, especially on sharper curves or in adverse weather conditions.

Maintaining a lower gear as you enter the curve allows your vehicle to respond more effectively to steering inputs, making it easier to navigate the turn smoothly. This technique also prevents over-revving of the engine and aids in braking if necessary. It is essential to approach curves with caution and preparedness to ensure the safety of both the driver and other road users.
